The past is always present with me. I cannot stop imagining the lives of my ancestors and how things were when my family was in Spain during a time of relative piece between three cultures-Catholic, Jewish and Muslim. In this piece I connect visual images referring to my family ancestry: the branches (referring to a family tree) are formed in a gothic arch (referring to Spain and to a Catholic background), which is surrounded by decorative elements of Muslim architecture. The sashes on the torso literally gather together these different cultures. Inside the form are the ruins of a family past shown in scenes from early American life, which are guarded by Victorian porcelain dolls, themselves ruined with limbs missing and broken. |
