Zozobra's Fire
stoneware, oxides, glazes, acrylics, commercial glazes. 48"t

I love this piece, because it reminds me of the great times I had as a youth, attending the burning of this old guy. Zozobra is a huge paper mache form of Old Man Gloom, who is set aflame once a year, in an effort to destroy all of the previous year's sorrows and woes. Tall shadowy figures at the bottom are the ones who light him up and the other small figures are the children on procession that gather around to watch the spectical. Words floating in the fire are: "debt", "fear", "loss", "storms", "anger", etc., which describe the things one may want to be rid of. Colorful fireworks flash and spark after the burning is finished and another year begins anew.
