With this sculpture I explore varying
levels of spirituality. I discovered this form in a dream and decided
to bring it to life. I had been researching my cultural background and
had become interested in Cohanim Hands, which are two open hands with
the thumbs and forefingers touching. This image, often seen on Jewish
graves, forms a passage for God’s power. The sculpture has a series of hands helping, reaching, supporting, the female figure which is twisting in space. The imagery around the waist of the figure is a reference to the Hopi potter, Nampeyo and forms a “belt” around the figure through which her spirit passes. The blue corn imagery also references Native American spirituality. |
