Sor Juana's Dream
Stoneware, Glazes, Acrylics, Epoxy - 55” x 22” x 15”

This piece tells the story of the 17th century Catholic nun and perhaps more significantly, the first well-known Latina scholar, poet, songwriter, theologist, and intellectual. The rear of the piece focuses on the actual events of her life, but the front offers an interpretation of her life not often given focus. I tell a story of the romantic relationship of Sor Juana and her benefactress the Vicereine, Countess Paredes of Spain, to whom she had written many love sonnets and love songs. The front shows almost a tattoo on her chest of one of those love sonnets where she describes in deeply felt sentiment, her desires for the attentions of the Viceriene. In this piece I have her finally able to express her desires for another woman without fear of condemnation.
