Artist's Biography

Welcome! See my works at Sorrel Sky Gallery in Durango, Colorado.

Deborah Rael-Buckley's sculptural works tell stories of contained memory through a series of figure and chair-based forms layered with what she terms "the taxonomy of memory": the layering of personal, cultural, historical and biological imagery. Her narrative style shows many influences fueled by research in gothic stained glass, the architecture of Antoni Gaudi and Simon Rodia, Renaissance painting, and the art and architecture of ancient Mexico. She engages viewers by placing them within the construct of her own memories and making them participants in the story being told.

May 2013 If you are in the Columbus, Ohio area, plan to see the show at the Ohio Wesleyan University (20 miles from Columbus) this winter and next spring. The University is mounting a show of New Mexico artists and I was invited to show some work. Maybe they'll have the space to show Synecdoche!

May 2013 Last week I deinstalled Synecdoche from the Harwood Museum and took it all to my studio-where there are space constraints. I was hoping to get someone to take the whole piece, perhaps to a public building, maybe that will be possible in the future. Now I am working on a series of heads, having to do with loss the of memory, since two of my favorite men in the worls, had memory loss issues at the the of their lives.

January 2013 I just finished installing SYNECDOCHE, a 15 foot tall wall installation with a free standing sculpture in front of it. It took almost 5 months to complete and it looks amazing. It's by far the most ambitious project to date. It is accompanied by a 10 minute time-lapsed video by Kathleen Brennan that records the entire process from the first day through the installation, which will be shown alongside the installation at the museum. Join me at the opening Friday February 8, 5-7pm at the Harwood Museum. Photos to follow soon. http://www.harwoodmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/119

December 2012 The Peter and Madeleine Martin Foundation director, has informed me that my bronze and ceramic sculpture titled "LasCuentistas", has been unanimously voted to be added to the permanent collections of the Albuquerque Museum. It will be on view at the museum by winter 2013 and will be located in the museum's permanent exhibition "Common Ground: Art in New Mexico". I am most grateful for Charles Strong, Director of the Martin Foundation for his efforts on my behalf.

(October 2012) Breaking news......coming in late October AND early November!!! The Peter and Madeleine Martin Foundation for the Creative Arts, purchased a piece of mine last year and they are gifting it to a museum-I should hear if it was accepted very soon. I applied for a Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Grant this year-shouId hear about that soon as well. I am currently working on the Curator's Wall installation-the title of the piece will be SYNECDOCHE.

(August 2012) I just heard from Jina Brennaman, the curator of the Harwood Museum in Taos, that I will be installing a new piece there early next year on the Curator's Wall. I can't believe what a great year I am having! This piece will be a bit of a departure and a stretch for me, in that it will include several pieces seemingly floating in air above a single female form. I MAY also have a few more piece in the Hispanic Gallery upstairs-so visitors to the museum will be able to view the new installation, then go up the stairs and view more of my work. That's all I want to say right now, but plan to visit the Harwood and view it. It will be on display from February 3-May 6, 2013.

(July 2012) I was honored to be included with a group of women artists featured in a wonderful book recently published by Lyn Bleiler and Robbie Steinback. (Blurb Press.com)

(May 2012) I got a really wonderful invitation to show my work with an amazing group of artists from Taos at the Center for Visual Arts in Denver, Colorado. I happily accepted and look forward to seeing the show, curated by Stephanis Grilli, an art writer whom I met at the Cherry Creek festival a few years ago. She and CVA director, Cecily put it all together. The show titled: Taos Contemporary will open May 29 and it sill be up through August. Check it out!

(March 2012) I have curated my second show recently with the support of the New Mexico Chapter of the National Organization for Women in the Arts (NMWA). The show titled: "The Art of the Dress: Four Personal Fittings" will be staged at the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM. It will open with a paid preview on Friday March 16, 5:30-7:30pm. It will feature the mixed media works of Michelle Cooke, the painting of Nancy Delpero, the ceramic sculpture of Deborah Rael-Buckley and the photographs of Zoe Zimmerman. The public opening will be Sunday March 18, 1-3pm. This show is a part of the "Remarkable Women of Taos" year-long series of events honoring the history of women in Taos.

There will be several other events that weekend as well, so take a weekend, come to Taos and visit the show!
